Together Through the Storms by Jeff and Sarah Walton
EQUIP20 Picks - books chosen and reviewed for you by our EQUIP team
Another marriage book? Really? This might be your thought upon seeing this recently released title by Jeff and Sarah Walton. Certainly, there is already a heaving shelf or two of marriage books at any Christian bookstore. But I think that this book is a particularly helpful addition because it is primarily concerned with looking at marriage and suffering. What happens when your marriage ends up being more on the for worse, for poorer and in sickness end of the spectrum? Jeff and Sarah have walked through a great deal of suffering in their marriage and have written this book of biblical encouragements for couples who are doing the same.
Together Through the Storms particularly focuses on the book of Job, perhaps not your usual starting point for a book on marriage! But it helpfully reflects on the truths taught there to encourage us in the trials that come. They cover things such as clinging to hope in loss, holding all things loosely, loving your spouse in chronic illness and waiting well when God seems silent. There are helpful chapters on how suffering affects intimacy in marriage, and when your spouse fails you. Whether your marriage is walking a difficult path now, or you want to fortify it for what may come, this book will offer a helpful, biblical framework for navigating those storms.
The book is also beautifully presented. It is a hardback with reflection questions, space for journaling and a ribbon marker. It would make a lovely gift for a friend who is going through difficult times. Ultimately reading this book will point you and your spouse to our faithful God and the enduring hope we have in Him.
