Guidance and the Voice of God by Phillip Jensen and Tony Payne
EQUIP20 Picks - books chosen and reviewed for you by our EQUIP team
This book is a classic and standout read for a reason. I have personally come back to this book since my late teen years until now as I approach my 30’s. Its easily digestible writing style and logical structure, while being a part of its enduring usefulness, are far overshadowed by its rich rewards for the reader who is ready to know God deeply and seek His council earnestly.
When we come to think on God’s guidance it is often as our minds are turned to a looming decision to be made. And while this book comes to our aid in that regard, it firstly brings our minds heavenward to grasp the plans of our Father. And that vision drives the following chapters. We find our place in and our response to those plans as crucial in shaping all our decisions, big and small. You may be surprised what God is guiding you about.
As we read it teases apart the errors in our thinking and heart and gives us a clearer and better way. This clarity is invaluable amidst the confusion the world bombards us with. In this book we are given truth that we can rest in and truth to challenge our hearts to again choose repentance and faith. Then, with this so helpfully established, we get to break down our decisions into ones of righteousness, good judgement or triviality. Then armed with those categories we are given case studies in church, work and marriage at the end of the book. We come away readily equipped for the circumstances before us.
With such a thorough and easy to read look at guidance, this would be an ideal book to gift a young adult as they embark on their adult life. It is also a very valuable reference to access regularly ourselves.
