Embracing Complementarianism | Graham Beynon and Jane Tooher
So, you’ve taken on the position that men and women are both created in the image of God, equal before him in dignity and worth. You also understand that this doesn’t mean we are the same. The Bible teaches distinct roles for men and women. Now what? Maybe you’re someone who has accepted this complementarian position and are now trying to work out what this should look like practically in the local church context.
Graham Beynon and Jane Tooher helped me to think through my convictions about the Bible’s teaching on men and women and pushed me to think about my own church. Are the women and men at my church relating appropriately as people who profess to belong to the household of God? Is there a healthy breadth of different ministries that men and women can be part of, and are they able to use their various gifts to make contributions to the life of the church?
I was particularly helped by the chapter on “Understanding Church”. I was urged to think again about the Bible’s teachings on unity, equality, family, love and leadership. I was reminded that only when a church is growing in these areas will we be able to embrace our different roles as men and women in service of one another.
Embracing Complementarianism is an uplifting book that gives practical examples of how men and women can work together in ministry to advance the work of the gospel. It is easy to read and has insightful reflection questions at the end of each chapter to work through individually or as a group. This book is for anyone who wants to learn more about the goodness of complementarianism and how it can be worked out positively in your church.
